Statistics Netherlands (CBS)
In a society where the amount of information is growing explosively, free access to reliable and integral data is crucial. As the national statistical office, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) provides reliable statistical information and data to produce insight into social issues, thus supporting the public debate, policy development and decision-making while contributing to prosperity, well-being and democracy.
CBS was established in 1899 in response to the need for independent and reliable information that advances the understanding of social issues. This is still the main role of CBS. Through time, CBS has grown into an innovative knowledge institution, with continuous adoption of new technologies and developments in order to safeguard the quality of its data and its independent position.
The methodology teams within CBS have expertise in research on innovative methods in primary observation, modelling time series, techniques on how to combine different data sources, data quality and Big Data methods. The aim is to produce statistics that are more timely, more detailed and of higher quality, and new statistics describing complex social phenomena using Big Data. CBDS has joined forces with more than 40 different national and international parties including companies, start-ups, knowledge institutes and governmental organisations.
The possibilities that Big Data offers have increased tremendously and the demand for information in society follows a similar pace. The methodology teams aim to respond to this demand by developing research into Big Data methods and statistical products based on Big Data. CBDS is a dynamic and challenging environment with a start-up atmosphere.
