The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) is an independent think tank that provides strategic advice to governments, non-governmental organizations, and corporations. We deliver practical solutions for challenges in a fast-changing world. Our multidisciplinary research agenda covers international and national security, defense planning, cybersecurity, and climate and energy. HCSS conducts research via innovative and data-driven approaches. 


About the Vacancy:


Our dashboard prototypes display a complex set of textual, numerical, temporal and spatial/geographical data. The primary task of a successful candidate will be to design and implement our dashboard prototypes as production-grade, web GUIs. He or she will work in close collaboration with the back-end developer to specify the necessary APIs and data-exchange methods, and populate the GUIs with our data.  


The Required Skills 


If you meet the following requirements, please send us your job application:  


  • Proven ability to develop interactive GUIs, and comprehensively display a large amount of data using tables, graphs, and maps  
  • Excellent JavaScript knowledge and experience 
  • A keen eye for GUI aesthetics and user experience 
  • Prior experience with node.js and server-side scripting 
  • Good understanding of web APIs and data exchange methods (e.g Ajax, JSON, XML) 
  • Good understanding of HTML(5) and CSS 
  • Proven experience with modern development frameworks and libraries (e.g. React, Angular, JQuery, D3) and preferably also cross-platform frameworks (browser and app development) 
  • Familiarity with system design and administration is desirable 
  • Experience in a Science/Research environment is also desirable
