Hardware Security and IoT

Are you sure that your system is secure if you do not secure the hardware? Do you know that attacks can be carried out also in the hardware supply chain? Do you want to secure the next generation of IoT and implantable devices? This 1-day masterclass covers two main challenges of hardware security: lightweight cryptography and hardware trojans.

Hardware is the root of trust, where the security of all the layers above is anchored. The pervasive diffusion of electronic systems in every aspects of our lives posed new challenges to hardware designers. Among them, there is certainly the need of embed robust security primitives everywhere, also in devices with extremely limited area, energy and power budgets. This challenge is addressed by the so called lightweight cryptography. Ensuring robust cryptography is not sufficient to guarantee security, since the security of robust devices can also be altered also during their production by adversaries that are able to insert hardware trojans. In this course, you will gain in depth knowledge about lightweight cryptography and hardware trojans.

More in detail, the masterclass will provide:

  • An introduction to the concept of lightweight design for cryptography, presenting the low area and the low energy point of view

  • Examples of implementations of the most relevant components of lightweight algorithms

  • An introduction to the problem of hardware trojans, reporting the most powerful techniques for injecting them and summarizing the most effective detection methods

  • Examples of hardware trojans from the trust-hub repository

After this masterclass you will:

  • Understand the methods to design lightweight cryptographic hardware accelerators and be able to apply them in real world examples
  • Understand the problem of hardware trojans and how it impacts the hardware supply chain
  • Learn the state of the art in hardware trojan injection and detection techniques and be able to apply them in real world
