Assistant Professor in Intelligence and Security

Faculty Governance and Global Affairs, the Institute of Security and Global Affairs is looking for an Assistant Professor in Intelligence and Security (1.0 FTE).

Key responsibilities

The Institute seeks to expand its academic staff by appointment of an assistant professor with teaching and research expertise intelligence studies. The successful applicant will be expected to:

• Do academic research and publish in the field of intelligence studies, security studies, and beyond;
• Develop and teach courses on intelligence and security related topics in the minor intelligence studies, the MA Crisis and Security Management, and the BA Security Studies;
• Conduct independent research and support the further and ongoing development and implementation of the research strategy of the Institute, specifically from an intelligence and security perspective;
• Supervise of thesis and capstone projects;
• Contribute to the tutorial system of student mentoring and advising;
• Acquisition and project management of research and training projects of third parties.

Selection criteria

• PhD degree in the humanities or social sciences, specifically in the field of intelligence studies, security studies, International Relations or a related field, preferably obtained prior to 2015;
• Demonstrable research in the field of intelligence studies and security studies;
• Outstanding research qualities manifest in an established or developing publication record;
• Demonstrable excellence in research-led teaching;
• Demonstrable passion for education, in and out of the classroom (experience with blended learning technologies);
• Demonstrable commitment to a close-knit, interdisciplinary academic community;
• Excellent command of English (and possibly Dutch). Candidates who do not have command of the Dutch language  are expected to commit to acquiring some fluency within a period of two years;
• Excellent network in the academic world of the intelligence studies and among professionals in the field of intelligence and security;
• Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualifications (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

Our Faculty/Institute

In our Research Group Intelligence and Security, intelligence is studied from a political, historical, ethical, judicial, and methodological perspective. The main goal is to improve our understanding of how intelligence and security services operate, how their methodologies can be complemented, and how they are and have been embedded in their broader political, bureaucratic, and societal context.  Research on the judicial, political, governance, historical, and ethical elements of intelligence and security should improve our understanding of how intelligence and security services relate to the broader (democratic) state they are part of. One of our ambitions is to encourage research next to the intelligence studies in the Anglo-Saxon world, which is traditionally the strongest – we therefore encourage the ‘continental European’ intelligence studies.
In order to fulfil these ambitions, we have designated four key areas on which our research focuses.

1. Politics and governance of intelligence and security;
2. The historical perspective on intelligence and security;
3. The judicial, ethical, and societal dimensions of intelligence;
4. Methodology, analysis and collection systems.

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is a scientific institute that focuses on interdisciplinary research and education within the international scientific field of security studies. ISGA analyses and studies issues in a coherent way from their local transnational and global impact. 
Researchers at our institute are engaged in interdisciplinary research and teaching within the international scientific field of security studies. The approach to issues of security is glocal, that is to say that the local, national, transnational and global impact are studied and analysed in conjunction with each other.

ISGA is part of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs and operates from The Hague, the third major city of the Netherlands, center of  national governance  and International City of Peace, Justice and Security.

Terms and conditions

The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamic team. He or she will initially be appointed for one year with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance.
Salary range from €3,475 to €4,757 gross per month (pay scale 11), in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.
