Internship | Assessment of the conditions of abandoned wells in potential CO2 storage reservoir

What will be your role?

Are you interested in subsurface applied science and would like to contribute to the energy transition? Do you want to contribute to a sustainable, safe and cost-efficient re-use of existing geo-energy infrastructure? Then, this (graduate) internship is for you.

This (graduate) internship will be part of a research project that aims to assess reusability of legacy wells as CO2 injectors. Existing legacy wells are considered as potential showstoppers for CO2 storage projects as they might not have been sealed considering the new application and could pose a risk to the containment of the injected gas. As part of this project, you will get a specific assignment, but you will also be invited to join the TNO project team in selected meetings and discussions to understand the broader perspective and to experience what it is like to work on applied science projects in TNO. Your assignment will be focused on:

  • Identifying the critical aspects of abandoned legacy wells penetrating the cap rock of candidate CCUS reservoirs and;
  • To evaluate challenges and opportunities associated with reusing them.

This may include developing an assessment framework for already abandoned wells including minimum requirements and critical considerations. The specific details of the assignment can be tuned in collaboration with the candidate and the University.

The project runs for three years and started in September 2019, preferably the (graduate) internship will run in the period September 2021 – April 2022.

 

What we expect from you?

You are (preferably) familiar with CCUS or sustainable geo-energy options and have a basic understanding of wells and well integrity, cap rock restoration (abandonment). Any experience with machine learning algorithms is an asset.
