Description:

Internship | ASSISTANCE Project

In the ASSISTANCE project, the goal is to help fire fighters by developing a platform where data from various sources (e.g. unmanned platforms, wearable sensors) will be integrated in order to inform FRs on potential hazardous situations.

What will be your role?

An explosion in an industry area (e.g., Rotterdam harbor) can cause injured humans, destructed buildings and infrastructure, chaos, and -possibly toxic- air pollution. Information about the dynamic situation is dynamic, incomplete, and sometimes uncertain, affecting task planning and performance continuously. Advancing the momentary situation awareness of fire fighter team members will improve safety and performance. In the ASSISTANCE project, the goal is to help fire fighters by developing a platform where data from various sources (e.g. unmanned platforms, wearable sensors) will be integrated in order to inform FRs on potential hazardous situations. The system prototype will be evaluated in three different evaluations with fire fighters.

Topics are, depending on your background and interest:
  • How can the interaction between humans (e.g., the fire fighters) and unmanned systems (e.g., robots, drones) be improved? For example, how can procedures be formalized or/and working agreements be specified that support norm-based behavior, addressing contextual factors (agreements are adjustable within specific constraints)?
  • How can trust and understanding of first responders be supported by explaining options and/or decisions?

What we expect from you?

You are a enthusiastic student with an ambition to work on a international project. You have a background in artificial intelligence or knowledge technology. Some experience with programming, experiments or statistics is a plus. You are also pragmatic, social and show initiative. You enjoy working on a challenging and socially relevant project.

What you'll get in return?

You want to work on the precursor of your career; an internship gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further.
