Come join QuTech and create the Quantum Future

QuTech is a mission-driven research institute, run by Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Together, we work on a radically new technology with world-changing potential, developing scalable prototypes of a quantum computer and an intrinsically safe quantum internet.

QuTech is creating the quantum future. We believe that quantum technology will be a game changer in many social and economic sectors, including health, agriculture, climate and safety.

To achieve our ambitious goals, we bring together scientists, engineers and industry in an inspiring environment – with plenty of space for ambition, entrepreneurship and innovation. Our research and engineering activities are conducted in three divisions: Quantum Computing, Quantum Internet and Qubit Research..

Our divisions and support teams include 220 FTE and over 300 dedicated people, and we are happy to welcome new software engineering colleagues in numerous disciplines and on different levels who share our vision and enthusiasm!

What do we do?

Our QuTech software engineers:

  • focus on state-of-the-art software development to support our quantum systems and quantum networks, controlling the quantum devices, analysing and visualising the results. Moreover, they develop sophisticated software for quantum compilers, quantum computer simulators, quantum network simulators and quantum network controllers.
  • develop software for our next generation of systems, which we open to the world, enabling any internet user to use our real-life quantum devices.
  • together with DevOps engineers build software to expand the ecosystem of intertwined quantum systems.

Next to developing excellent software products, our software engineers face process challenges as well. In the complex environment of QuTech it is quite a challenge to develop professional software while working within a demanding research setting. The software requirements are changing at high speed, software will be required for functionalities not yet invented and we face software challenges without solutions on Stack Overflow. Also, our software engineers need to deliver within multi-disciplinary teams with many stakeholders.

The QuTech software development environments consist of mainly Linux (virtualised and/or embedded) environments. The main programming language used are Object Oriented Python, C/C++ and some other languages for specific jobs. We work agile in all of our teams, using common tools for versioning, backlog management, documentation, such as GitLab, Jira and Confluence.

What do we expect from you

We are hiring to fill numerous positions. The Ideal candidate doesn’t match all these points.

  • Education: degree in computer science or technical degree with a proven few years of software engineering experience
  • Experience with scalable and adaptable system/software architectures that enable the organisation to grow and to react on (technology) changes in the future (software architect)
  • Masters software solution stacks for Python and C/C++ (software architect)
  • Experience with embedded systems (micro controllers and FPGAs)
  • Experienced in all aspects of the software development life cycle (team lead)
  • Coaching skills (team lead)
  • Organisational skills/management skills (team lead)
  • Experience with different types of software testing and test definition (software test engineer)
  • Affinity with improving testability for products in different stages of the software product life cycle (software test engineer)
  • Experience with testing with hardware in the loop as well as mocked hardware (software test engineer)
  • Fluency in object oriented analysis and design
  • Affinity with Scrum/Agile methodologies
  • Comfortable to operate in a challenging and constantly changing environment
  • Good communicator, fluent in English and able to engage with various customers, partners and suppliers
  • Passionate about advancing software engineering to entirely new heights
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and able to independently devise solutions
  • Team player, in a mixed team of software and hardware engineers and scientists
  • Familiarity with quantum communications or quantum mechanics is a plus but not required

What can you expect from us

The software engineering positions are 0.8 – 1.0 FTE roles, with a minimum of 32 hours per week and a maximum of 38 hours per week. Appointment is for one year, with the option to become structural. The UFO profiles range from ICT Developer 4 to ICT Developer 2, with a full-time salary based on VSNU-CAO Scale 9-11 (salary min 2,968 and max 5,211 gross per month on a full time basis). The actual salary will be based on your knowledge and relevant work-experience.

TU Delft/QuTech offers a customisable compensation package, an attractive pension scheme, holiday allowance, generous holidays, 13th month pay (paid as a pro-rata bonus in December), a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers our employees childcare and an international primary school. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (VSNU-CAO). Dutch citizenship or a European working permit is required to apply.

TU Delft

Your contract will be with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), an organisation built on strong foundations. As creators of the world-famous Dutch waterworks, and pioneers in biotech, TU Delft is a top international university combining science, engineering and design. It delivers world class results in education, research and innovation.

For generations, our engineers have proven to be entrepreneurial problem-solvers in both business and social contexts. TU Delft offers 16 Bachelor’s and 32 Master’s programs to more than 23,000 students. Our scientific staff consists of 3,500 staff members and 2,800 PhD candidates. Together we imagine, invent and create solutions using technology to ensure positive change on a global scale: Challenge. Change. Impact!

About QuTech software engineering

QuTech will grow at an accelerated pace the coming years and we will have many new positions. Our ambition is to be one of the best worldwide in Quantum research. To realise this, we will fortify our software engineering: hiring people with expert knowledge and skills, and give them room to excel.

Building a talent pool of software engineers, ranging from talented young engineers who will be trained at the job to senior software engineers in the role of software architect, lead software engineer or team lead. This is where you come in!
