Description:

Come join QuTech and create the Quantum Future!

QuTech is a mission-driven research institute run jointly by Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Together, we work on a radically new technology with world-changing potential, developing scalable prototypes of a quantum computer and an intrinsically safe quantum internet.

We are creating the quantum future and we believe that quantum technology will be a game changer in many social and economic sectors – including health, agriculture, climate and safety. To achieve our ambitious goals, we bring together scientists, engineers and industry in an inspiring environment, with plenty of space for ambition, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Our research and engineering activities are conducted in three divisions: Quantum Computing, Quantum Internet and Qubit

Research.

Our divisions and support teams include 220 FTE and over 300 dedicated people. Today, we looking for a new mid-senior software engineer to join our Quantum Internet division.

Quantum Internet Division
A future quantum internet will connect quantum computers all over the world. It will enable to send and receive information using quantum bits that follow the rules of quantum mechanics.

In the Quantum Internet division, our goal is to develop technologies to enable quantum communication between any two places on earth.

For this radically new technology several major new and potentially game-changing applications have already been identified. One such application is to provide a fundamentally secure way of communication, in which privacy is guaranteed by the laws of physics. Also, quantum processors can be connected into a quantum network in order to assemble a large quantum computing cluster.

This approach is called networked quantum computing and offers a natural path towards scalability. Combining a quantum internet and a networked quantum computer allows remote users/providers to perform secure quantum computing ‘in the cloud’.

Our goals are to develop a full quantum network stack and novel applications for a quantum internet and to perform experimental demonstrations, some of which already compatible with existing telecom infrastructure, that push the frontier of quantum networking and yield new techniques and insights.

Job description

Your role as a Software Engineer

As a software engineer you will be joining a passionate and dedicated team of scientist and engineers, working on ground-breaking scientific experiments and demonstrator projects in the field of quantum communication. You will be responsible for developing, maintaining and supporting software that enables these experiments across various QuTech labs.”

This software includes, but is not limited to, instrument drivers, data handling, analysis software and graphical user interfaces. You are therefore a generalist, comfortable to take up various tasks at different levels of abstraction.

You are able to trade off the needs of the various users and choose for reusable solutions where possible. Software quality and maintainability are important to you.

You are able to interact efficiently with researchers in the quantum domain (Ph.D. candidates and postdocs) and are able to translate their domain-specific needs to the software domain. A background in or affinity with quantum physics/theory is useful.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science (embedded), Electrical Engineering or Physics
  • Affinity with quantum physics is a plus
  • Professional software development experience (5+ years)
  • Proficient in Python (5+ years of practical experience); experience with C and/or C++ is a plus
  • Familiarity with FPGAs is a plus
  • Experience with low-level software (firmware, Linux device drivers, etc.)
  • Implementation experience with various communication protocols (RS232, I2C, etc.)
  • Experience with USB, TCP/IP, GBIP for implementations for in QMI
  • Demonstrable experience in all aspects of software lifecycle: design, implementation, testing, deployment and maintenance
  • Skilled in using Git and Gitlab
  • Experience with CI/CD
  • Experienced in and comfortable with Agile workflows
  • You value software quality, documentation and maintainability
  • Team player, but able to work independently on complex problems
  • Fluent in English
  • Dutch citizenship or a European working permit is required to apply

Conditions of employment

The software engineering position is a 0.8 – 1.0 FTE role, with a minimum of 32 hours per week and a maximum of 38 hours per week. This is a project for one year with the option to become structural. The UFO profile is ICT Developer 2, with a full-time salary based on VSNU-CAO Scale11 (salary min 3831 to 5.230 gross per month on a fulltime basis).

On top of that, TU Delft/QuTech offers a great customizable compensation package with an generous holidays (41 days off if you work full time), attractive pension scheme, holiday allowance in May and a 13th month pay (paid as a pro-rata bonus in December). We also offer a discount for health insurance, sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers our employees childcare and an international primary school. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (VSNU-CAO). Dutch citizenship or a European working permit is required to apply.

TU Delft as an employer

Your contract will be with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), an organisation built on strong foundations. As creators of the world-famous Dutch waterworks, and pioneers in biotech, TU Delft is a top international university combining science, engineering and design. It delivers world class results in education, research and innovation.

For generations, our engineers have proven to be entrepreneurial problem-solvers in both business and social contexts. TU Delft offers 16 Bachelor’s and 32 Master’s programs to more than 23,000 students. Our scientific staff consists of 3,500 staff members and 2,800 PhD candidates. Together we imagine, invent and create solutions using technology to ensure positive change on a global scale:

Challenge. Change. Impact!
