Assistant Professor Cybersecurity Governance with a focus on international cybersecurity and politics

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) of Leiden University is inviting applications for the position of Assistant Professor Cybersecurity Governance (1 fte) with a focus on international cybersecurity and politics. This position is situated within Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA), part of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (FGGA) and based in The Hague.

Key responsibilities
The Institute seeks to expand its academic staff by appointment of an assistant professor with teaching and research expertise in the field of international cybersecurity broadly, with a preference for the political dimension. The successful applicant will be expected to:

• Develop and teach courses on cybersecurity challenges in the international arena, at Bachelor, Master and post-Master level in various programs at the Institute;
• Contribute to the development of the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate curriculum, especially related to cybersecurity governance;
• Supervise Master theses and assist in supervising PhD dissertations;
• Conduct research in the field of international cybersecurity and/or international security in/of cyberspace, from a social science or humanities perspective (e.g. political science, public administration, law, sociology, psychology, international relations, science and technology studies, philosophy (of technology) etc.);
• Disseminate research findings through high-ranking international blind peer review journals, edited volumes, books, whitepapers, conference presentations, policy reports, policy advise and (inter)national popular media;
• Contribute to securing external funding to support research and other activities; 
• Participate in one or more of the Institute’s boards, e.g. the Educational board or the Admissions committee or one of its educational programs;
• Develop and contribute to global networks in the public, private and education sectors in the field of cybersecurity governance. This includes acting as a representative at national and international forums;
• Contribute to public and policy debates on national and global security issues especially pertaining to cybersecurity and the international arena.

Selection Criteria

The candidates must have:

• A PhD degree from an internationally ranked tertiary institution in a relevant field, e.g. political science, public administration, law, sociology, psychology, international relations, science and technology studies, philosophy etc.;
• Extensive knowledge of cybersecurity challenges inf/for the international arena, especially in relation to politics and governance, with a solid track record of published research on this topic;
• A record of published peer-reviewed research;
• A multidisciplinary background, and experience with working in multi- or interdisciplinary teams;
• Demonstrable excellence in research-led teaching in English-taught courses;
• Demonstrable passion for education, in and out of the classroom (with a preference for experience with blended learning technologies);
• An excellent network in the world of academics and professionals in the field of international cybersecurity, both domestically and internationally;
• Demonstrable commitment to the public and political debate;
• Experience in government-commissioned research projects, and/or success in grant acquisition, or show promise to develop high-quality research grant applications;
• Proficiency in English. Fluency in Dutch is considered an asset;
• Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, (s)he must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is a scientific institute that focuses on multidisciplinary research and education within the international scientific field of security studies. ISGA analyses and studies issues in a coherent way from their local transnational and global impact.  Researchers at our institute are engaged in interdisciplinary research and teaching within the international scientific field of security studies. The approach to issues of security is glocal, that is to say that the local, national, transnational and global impact are studied and analysed in conjunction with each other.

ISGA operates from The Hague, the third major city of the Netherlands, center of national governance and International City of Peace, Justice and Security. 

Terms and conditions
The position starts as soon as possible, but no later than 1 September 2022. The appointment will be made on a temporary contract of 1 year. A permanent appointment may be possible during or after the term of the initial contract, depending upon performance (including teaching, research and administration) and the budgetary situation of the Institute. The salary ranges from € 3,637 to € 4,978 gross per month (pay scale 11 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).

 The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamic team. He or she will initially be appointed for one year.  A permanent appointment may be possible during or after the term of the initial contract, depending upon performance (including teaching, research and administration) and the budgetary situation of the Institute.
