Assistant Professor in Cyber Security Governance

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) at Leiden University is inviting applications for an Assistant Professor in Cyber Security Governance (1 FTE)

Background and Key responsibilities

• Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is inviting applications for a full-time Assistant Professor position in Cyber Security Governance. The successful candidate will have strong research and teaching record in cyber security governance, with a secondary emphasis on international law. The candidate should also have a strong teaching background in other topics related to the Institute’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programme offerings. The position is aimed at strengthening the Institute’s teaching, research and grant-acquisition capacities in a phase of growth and exciting interdisciplinary research opportunities.
• The successful applicant will be part of an ambitious and dynamically growing Institute and is expected to:
• Conduct independent research in the fields of international cyber security governance, with a secondary focus on international law, including topics related to cyber conflict, cyber diplomacy, internet governance, and international law and cyberspace;
• Support the ongoing development and implementation of the ISGA’s research strategy by publishing in leading international outlets and by attracting research grants;
• Teach in the Master’s programme in Crisis and Security Management, and the Executive Master Cyber Security;
• Teach in our Bachelor programmes, or one of the Institute’s Minors;
• Contribute to the development of new courses or programme offerings at the graduate or undergraduate level;
• Participate in committees related to functioning of the Institute and its programmes;
• Supervise theses.

Selection Criteria

• PhD degree in political science, international relations, public administration, law, or a closely related field. A secondary background in international law is highly appreciated.
• Strong research qualities manifested in an established or developing publication record that includes publications in international peer-reviewed journals in areas broadly related to international cyber security governance, internet governance and international law.
• Demonstrable experience in - and passion for - research-led teaching.
• Applicants must be able to teach in English.
• Ability to connect academic research to policy-oriented impact.
• Strong policy network in the area of multi-level governance, international organization, international relations or comparative politics more generally.
• Demonstrable commitment to contributing to public debate at the national, regional and global related to core issues of international cyber security governance

Institute of Security and Global Affairs

Terms and conditions
The envisaged starting date for this position is 8 January 2024, but can be determined in consultation with the candidate. The appointment will be under the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities. The appointment will initially be for 1 year, with the possibility and intention of turning the position into a permanent one, based on funding and performance.

The salary varies, depending on qualifications and experience, from € 3.974 to € 5.439 gross per month based on full-time employment (scale 11 for Assistant professor).
