Faculty Governance and Global Affairs, Institute of Security and Global Affairs is looking for an Assistant Professor Security and Conflict Studies (1.0 FTE).

 

Key responsibilities

The Institute seeks to expand its academic staff by appointment of an assistant professor with teaching and research expertise in international security and conflict studies. The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Develop and teach courses in the area of contemporary war, peace building and peace keeping and conflict mediation;
  • Conduct independent research and support the ongoing development and implementation of the research strategy of the Institute;
  • Supervise of  thesis and capstone projects;
  • Contribute to the tutorial system of student mentoring and advising;
  • Contribute to the acquisition and project management of research and training projects of third parties.

Selection criteria

  • PhD degree in the broad fields of security studies, war studies, public administration, political science or international relations;
  • Demonstrable research in the field of international security and conflict resolution, peace building and peace keeping,  conflict mediation;
  • Outstanding research qualities manifest in an established or developing publication record;
  • Demonstrable excellence in research-led teaching;
  • Demonstrable passion for education, in and out of the classroom (experience with blended learning technologies);
  • Demonstrable experience in teamwork and interdisciplinary interaction;
  • Excellent command of English;
  • Excellent network in the world of professionals in the field of security and global affairs, conflict resolution, peace keeping and peace building;
  • Candidates who do not have command of the Dutch language  are expected to commit to acquiring some fluency within a period of two years;
  • Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualifications (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

Our Faculty/Institute

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is a scientific institute that focuses on interdisciplinary research and education within the international scientific field of security studies. ISGA analyses and studies issues in a coherent way from their local transnational and global impact. 
Researchers at our institute are engaged in interdisciplinary research and teaching within the international scientific field of security studies. The approach to issues of security is glocal, that is to say that the local, national, transnational and global impact are studied and analysed in conjunction with each other.

ISGA is part of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs and operates from The Hague, the third major city of the Netherlands, center of  national governance  and International City of Peace, Justice and Security.

 

Terms and conditions

The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamic team. He or she will initially be appointed for one year with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance.
Salary range from €3,475 to €4,757 gross per month (pay scale 11), in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.
