Join us in shaping the future of quantum computing!

We are looking for a fabrication quantum engineer to join us in the Veldhorst lab at QuTech. Our team is dynamic and inclusive; with each member bringing unique perspectives and expertise on innovative research in semiconductor quantum technology.

The Veldhorst lab studies quantum dots for quantum computation, aiming to engineer emergent quantum phenomena in a tunable fashion, to simulate non-trivial quantum physics, and ultimately to compute classically hard problems. A foundational aspect to make impact and to enable advances in this domain is the realization of high quality semiconductor quantum devices. Therefore, we are seeking for a Quantum Engineer whose primary focus is on fabrication. The goal will not only to ensure continuous improvement on the fabrication routines but also to have the ambition to create and to ensure reliable and reproducible quantum devices.

As a quantum engineer responsible for fabrication, you will interact with various groups in QuTech that work on the development of semiconductor quantum technology to optimize the joint progress, and in particular collaborate with the team working on the growth of high-quality heterostructures (Scappucci lab). You will operate from the Veldhorst lab, but also support other QuTech groups and in particular the Vanderypen group. We will offer you a unique opportunity where every day brings new challenges and where, as part of a team, you will be contributing to cutting-edge research in quantum computing and semiconductor technology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fabrication of advanced semiconductor quantum computing devices
  • Analysis and inspection of quantum devices, establishing good feedback and feedforward
  • Joint design of quantum devices and professionalization of its approach
  • Stay current with developments in fabrication, semiconductor materials, and quantum device technology.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate whose primary goal is fabrication, with a strong ambition to create high-quality devices that enable researchers to perform cutting-edge scientific work. Whether you just about to finish your PhD and have experience with fabrication and nanolithography or you are an experienced quantum engineer, this role is tailored for you! We are not only considering experience and skills but also your passion for this topic and the right attitude. Whether you are junior or senior, we will adapt the role and give you the proper training or challenge, allow you to grow and thrive in this role. We are also committed to creating an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and we do encourage women and individuals from underrepresented groups to apply.

The main qualifications we are looking for are:

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with fabrication of nanodevices, e-beam lithography, and growth techniques such as ALD and metal deposition.
  • Background in semiconductor physics and device fabrication.
  • Proficiency in the design and characterization of quantum dot devices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with quantum computing concepts and applications.
  • Prior experience in a research or industrial setting focused on semiconductor device fabrication or quantum technology.

Conditions of employment

As a quantum engineer, you will receive a 1-year contract with the aims to offer you a permanent contract afterwards. Because we are reaching out to a large target audience, we will offer 2 different scales: Scale 10 (€3345 to €5278) for junior to mid-senior candidates and Scale 11 (€4492 to €6148) for senior candidates. This range reflects our commitment to supporting professionals at different stages of their career and offering a competitive compensation. On top of that we are also offering:

  • A job of 38 hours per week
  • 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
  • An excellent pension scheme via the ABP.
  • The possibility to compile an individual employment package every year.
  • Discount with health insurers.
  • Flexible working week.
  • Up to 41 days off per year based on a full time contract (38 hours).
  • Plenty of opportunities for education, training and courses.
  • Partially paid parental leave
  • International daycare
  • Attention for working healthy and energetically with the vitality program.

Department

QuTech is a mission-driven research institute of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Together, we work on radically new technologies with world-changing potential. Our mission: to develop scalable prototypes of a quantum computer and a quantum internet by integrating world-class research and groundbreaking innovation. Through excellence, relevance, and leadership, we cultivate a vibrant quantum technology ecosystem. We are jointly creating the quantum future, because we believe that quantum technologies can be a game changer in many societal and economic sectors, including health, agriculture and safety. Our research and engineering activities are conducted in three divisions: Quantum Computing, Quantum Internet and Qubit Research. The Quantum Engineer position is for the Computing division.
