Police services do a lot of research into child abuse. They confiscate a lot of digital material from suspects, sometimes in the millions of images and/or videos. Investigators review images to look for clues to try to identify victims and perpetrators. Every detail can cause a breakthrough in the case. Every object in a picture can be a clue, but pictures aren’t always perfect. Sometimes they are too dark or too bright, the contrast might not be optimal, or the orientation makes it difficult to watch.

We want to give our customers options to process those not-ideal images as well by giving them a web component that can change images in a similar way as photo editing software can do. The original image however must stay intact, so the component must do all changes ‘on the fly’ and based on a user’s input on the scale of the change (for example a slider to indicate how much brighter an image needs to be rendered).

The Assignment

Research, Design and Implement a web component that makes image alterations ‘on the fly’, based on the users’ settings and without changing the original image. The first step is to analyze which image alterations are desired by our customers and which alterations are possible in a web environment. The second step is to create a design of the new web component and after that you build the component in such a way that it can easily be integrated into our platform. Testing and documenting of your work is obviously also part of the assignment.

Expected End Result

  • A research paper with findings and recommendations regarding image alterations.
  • A prototype with a web component to alter images ‘on the fly’.
  • Technical documentation in such a way that our team can continue with your work.

Task description

What is expected of you?

  • Ability to work independently but also in teams that develops using the Agile Scrum methodology.
  • Developing in Microsoft Visual Studio with C#.NET
  • Making use front end technologies like JavaScript and/or Blazor
