Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Extended Reality software-engineer at TNO in The Hague!

About this position

As Extended Reality (XR) software engineer you will work on the development of state-of-the-art XR technology – VR as well as AR – and innovative immersive applications. Together we enable professionals within Defense and Justice & Security to optimally apply these immersive applications in their preparations on the most challenging tasks. Does this excite you? Then join the Modelling, Simulation & Gaming research group with your development talent.

What will be your role?

With the development of innovative XR techniques and applications, you and your colleagues answer various customer questions. We work in multidisciplinary project teams with experts from other TNO departments, including the field of human factors, information systems and weapon systems.

Within the team you discuss how ideas can be implemented in prototypes or experimental setups, and then you start with the development of the application. The immersive applications you develop will for example be used for demonstration of new training concepts or evaluation of new operational applications. One thing is certain: with the innovation you will be working on, we help our customers in the security domain to continuously modernize.

An example of a project that we are working on? There are several 3D techniques available to support decision making and understanding. What is really useful in the complex planning processes of Military personnel preparing for a mission? While you develop some tools to set up an experiment, your colleagues set up the experiment. After the experiment your team collects the feedback and together you decide if you need to make some changes to the concept. If the concept is ready, a next challenge could be to support de MOD with the acquisition process of a new simulator; based on your concept.

What we expect from you

With your work you want to be of significance for innovation in the military and security domain. With your proactive attitude and communication skills you are able to contribute to multiple projects on a daily basis. You like the challenge of developing and coupling new hard- and software

Here’s what else we require:

  • A background in software engineering, computer science, computer engineering, or another relevant technical direction;
  • A structured and methodical approach to software development;
  • Experience with 3D engines (Unity or Unreal Engine);
  • Experience with Virtual and/or Augmented Reality technology. Preferably, you have experience developing an AR/VR application in Unity or Unreal Engine;
  • Experience with several modern programming languages (e.g. C++, C#, Javascript) and with modern software development environments;
  • Affinity in the field of human factors is an advantage;
  • Professional proficiency in English and in Dutch (or you are willing to achieve the level necessary in Dutch).
