In support of the trend towards ever more complex cross-sector, supply chain collaboration, a vision and ambition is aimed at an interoperable, multi-tenant (and trusted) data sharing infrastructure. The traditionally siloed application- and sector specific data exchange infrastructures will have to evolve towards a more interconnected (federated) infrastructure consisting of an ecosystem of separate, interoperable and collaborating data exchanges. The realization of this vision of the ecosystem is currently happening through various national and international initiatives developing the required frameworks and technology. Proponents of this vision and ambition are for example: The Netherlands Organization for applied scientific research (TNO) is an active player in these initiatives and is formally the Dutch Regional hub for the IDS Association.
In the ecosystem, individual data exchanges will have their own users/organizations and will serve its own local application domain or community. Through their interoperability however, the interconnected data exchanges can jointly serve the more global society of diverse groups of users/organizations across individual domains and communities, thereby enabling data sharing between previously distinct organizations. The main drivers for this architecture are enabling data sovereignty, secure transactions and providing connectivity among enterprises. 

Organizations are becoming ever more aware that data is a real valuable asset in the emerging data economy and should be handled by the organizations as such. Therefore, in the transition towards the realization of the vision of the data sharing ecosystem as shown in the figure, data sovereignty is the key prerequisite sine qua non a data provider may not be prepared to share its potentially sensitive data. Data sovereignty encompasses the data providers being in control over the terms of use under which he shares his data.

Within the international IDS community, the topic of data sovereignty is a key focal point and architectures for defining and enforcing data sovereignty are being developed and tested. This topic of data sovereignty in the IDS architecture is the focal point of this MsC research assignment. Examples of research questions to be addressed are:
  • What data sovereignty technologies can potentially be used within the overarching IDS reference architecture?
  • What are the pros and cons of these various data sovereignty technologies within the context of the IDS initiative?
  • How is interoperability to be realized between these various data sovereignty technologies?
  • Develop IDS Data Sovereignty Proof-of-Concept environment at TNO.
These research topics will result in a combination of theoretical and practical activities to be part of this challenging and innovative assignment.


You are an ambitious master student with both scientific and practical skills (designing architectures, developing the PoC and presenting solutions). You strive for an excellent thesis result and you are at least available for 6 months of (fulltime) work at the TNO premises. You have a background in Computing Science and a special interest in Software Engineering. You are pro-active and independent, at the same time a good team player.
