Introduction:
Urban Strategy technology developed by TNO allows cities, knowledge institutes (e.g. Universities) and private stakeholders to build interactive, integral and predictive digital twins of cities. With these predictive digital twins cities can then predict the impact of spatial policy choices on air quality, noise pollution, costs and health. A set of basic indicators makes it clear where policies are needed or where they’re not required. Urban Strategy is one of its kind because it allows these policies to be calculated in minutes and can calculate for multiple domains. In this way Urban Strategy is the Sim City for professionals!

In recent years TNO has focused on innovating the core of and adding extra domains to Urban Strategy. We are now at the verge of scaling up with this technology in a global venture that will deploy Urban Strategy as a SaaS solution. As a lead developer of the Urban Digital Twin Software Suite you will ensure the productization and service of Urban Strategy to be ready for this scale up. For you as lead developer, a transfer from TNO to a spin of venture in the near future is a likely scenario.

What will be your role?
As the Lead Developer, you play a critical role in shaping the technical direction and success of the Urban Digital Twin Software Suite. You are a highly skilled and experienced software development professional. Your technical powers and leadership capabilities are crucial in driving the success of this advanced software solution.

In this role, you will lead a team of developers specializing in HPC and user interface development. Your experience enables you to lead the productization of high-performance algorithms and simulations for the Urban Strategy platform to a TRL level that fits with a SaaS model. Additionally, your affinity with web application development ensures the creation of intuitive and feature-rich user interfaces.

Your responsibilities encompass overseeing the technical aspects of the software suite, from architecture design to implementation and testing. You provide guidance and support to the development team, ensuring adherence to design principles, coding best practices, performance optimization, and scalability. By leveraging your expertise in HPC and CUDA C++, you drive the efficient utilization of computing resources and maximize the software's computational capabilities.

Collaboration is a key aspect of your role. You work closely with the Product Owner, business development team, and project managers to align technical solutions with customer requirements and business objectives.

Your ability to translate product requirements into technical specifications, and to estimate development time and resource requirements accurately, contributes to efficient planning and execution.

As a natural leader, you inspire and empower your team to excel. You foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing, encouraging team members to contribute their expertise and ideas.

Your excellent communication skills facilitate effective collaboration, ensuring seamless coordination between the development team and other stakeholders. While your team focuses on the productization of urban strategy.

The development team and scientist at TNO will focus on the innovation. Together with the lead architect within the TNO urban strategy innovation team you will bridge the gap between these teams and environments. 

Your broad understanding of software development principles and practices allows you to make informed technology choices. You collaborate with the team to evaluate and select the most suitable programming languages, frameworks, and tools based on project requirements, scalability, and performance considerations.

With your hands on experience, problem-solving skills and analytical mindset, you address technical challenges proactively. You collaborate with the product team to evaluate feasibility, make technical trade-offs, and propose optimal solutions that balance performance, scalability, and user experience.

You know how to turn a project objective into a technical programme and can explain clearly to developers what they need to create. Creating new things energizes you. You think creatively, are passionate about what you do and know how to connect people. You also like the dynamics of the high-tech industry. Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

• A relevant academic degree and relevant work experience in IT
• Experience as a lead developer or systems architect in similar projects
• Experience with HPC
• Experience in managing and/or coaching developers.
