PRODUCT OWNER

WHAT WILL YOU DO AS A PRODUCT OWNER?

The main goal of the Product Owner is to bridge the gap between the product strategy and development. Therefore, the Product Owner combines high-level goals set by the product management team with market and customer needs, to translate product features into users stories, arrange and prioritize sprints and evaluate progress at each stage.

The Product Owner oversees its team’s backlog to ensure a good balance between feature development, product improvements and bug resolution, and communicates planning expectations to the various internal and external stakeholders. 

 

Typical tasks of the Product Owner are to:

  • Translate the product strategy, product features and goals into user stories (or other development items);
  • Oversee and manage the sprint content and backlog priorities of the development team;
  • Understand the market and customer needs to be able to clarify the “how” and “why” behind the tasks;
  • Work closely with the Product Management team to understand how the product strategy fits in the bigger picture;
  • Collaborate with the Technical Lead(s) to ensure that deliverables meet requirements and desired quality;
  • Be able to align technical stakeholders around the roadmap and its implications on development efforts;
  • Collaborate with partners to ensure a positive product experience and integrability with 3rd party tools or sources;
  • Support the management team in identifying bottle necks and issues, and suggesting improvements to processes and workflows;
  • Work with the consultants to provide an optimum customer experience and get clarity on requirements;
  • Be able to present and defend the product vision to gain buy-in of the development team;
  • Empower the team in being autonomous but regularly evaluate the work done to provide feedback.

WHAT DO WE EXPECT FROM A PRODUCT OWNER?

  • •  At least a At least a BSc or equivalent, preferably a MSc in relevant field;
  • •  At least 5 years of experience as Product Owner;
  • •  Proven track record in the above (reference from previous position);
  • •  Capacity to translate product features into users stories;
  • •  Technical skills and knowledge of software development best practices;
  • •  Leadership, ability to enthusiast and drive the development team;
  • •  Project and people management skills;
  • •  Ability to frequently switch between tasks and projects;
  • •  Analytical skills and problem solving mindset;
  • • Perfect verbal and written English, Dutch would be a great addition.
