Description:

Contribute to a reliable, secure, and sustainable digital infrastructure. Envision it. Become a Senior Project Manager at TNO in The Hague.

About this position

A powerful digital future in The Netherlands and Europe is unthinkable without research and innovation. Fortunately, TNO has established an exciting and promising research portfolio which you can bring into fruition. As a Project Manager at TNO, you will work at the forefront of applied research and pragmatic ICT solutions. Join our dedicated team of researchers & ICT specialists and support the digital transformation, a critical step to resolving the complex challenges faced by industry and society as a whole!

What will be your role?

At TNO’s Networks department within the ICT unit you will be bridging the world of research and pragmatic ICT-driven solutions for a fast, secure, and sustainable digital transformation. As a Project Manager of R&D projects in the ICT area, you successfully complete complex projects involving a multitude of stakeholders, including market players from domains such as IT & telecommunications, mobility, and defense, as well as governmental policy makers both in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe.

Projects focus areas include 5G/6G mobile networks, media networks, and cloud computing infrastructure. The projects you will manage range from longer-term research & development, technology strategy, standardization, to simulations and (field) trials of technology and applications.

Your project teams vary from five to twenty people, and you will manage several projects simultaneously. The neutrality and multi-disciplinarity of TNO helps you focus on the bigger picture, in which stakeholder management is key. It will be your challenge to mobilize and unite parties, manage project-related risks, and flexibly handle with your team the intrinsically volatile goals and planning to deliver future-proof system architectures and digital services.

What we expect from you

Inspiring and motivating people, you initiate and manage projects for which you take responsibility. Your cultural awareness and communication skills help you navigate sensitivities and positively influence teams, customers, partners, and other stakeholders to shape and reach your common goals. At TNO we work according to the International Project Management Association (IPMA) guidelines. Therefore, familiarity is desired with IPMA methods or at least with other project management methods and practices such as PRINCE2 or PMBOK. Your role may involve travelling within the Netherlands and abroad to attend conferences and consortium meetings with partners.

The knowledge and experience you bring to TNO include:

  • a Master’s Degree in computer science, telecommunications, or equivalent engineering fields;
  • at least 8 years of experience of project management;

The Networks research group consists of a strong and enthusiastic international team that deals with innovations in digital infrastructures. We contribute to innovations in data connectivity, storage and processing that are the foundation for all digital infrastructures.

Our experts fulfil internationally leading roles such as working group chairing in global standardization (e.g., ETSI, 3GPP) and governing board membership in the body in charge of setting the European research agenda. In parallel, we experiment with in-house reference implementations for 5G, cloud and eXtended Reality (XR). These reference implementations are used in field trials in collaboration with ecosystem partners and customers.

Our excellent facilities such as our research cloud, 5G test network and media lab are an integral part in many of our research activities, e.g., in creating reference implementations and proof of concepts for validation of our innovations.
At Networks we are addressing three key challenges: (i) creating high-performance and ubiquitous digital infrastructures (ii) supporting tailored virtual infrastructures on top of a larger shared infrastructures and (iii) to facilitating collaboration at distance through networked XR.
