Description:

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Systems Engineer Sensors and Robotvision at TNO in Delft!

What will be your role?

Introduction
Pushing the performance of high-tech instruments to its ultimate limits requires in-depth knowledge of dynamics and control. Will you help us to make the impossible possible?

The research group Optomechatronics develops optomechanical and mechatronic systems for extreme performance in demanding environments. We push the limits of technology; to stimulate industry and enable scientific discovery. In addition to our internal research programs we execute large commercial projects for customers in the domains of Space & Science instrumentation and Semiconductor Equipment. Typical application domains for our dynamics & control specialists are ground-based astronomy (including adaptive optics), and free-space optical communication (including accurate pointing control of narrow laser beams). The role of the group within the strong global position of the Dutch mechatronics industry is that of supplier of breakthrough technology. The group has a close collaboration with several universities and research institutes and a large network in industry.

What will be your role?
In your role as senior system engineer, you are the technical leader in multidisciplinary teams of specialists and are the technical 'conscience' in projects. To do this, you need to be creative and have a good understanding of the expertises you're working with; mainly optics, mechanics, and control engineering.

For this role your main focus will be on SmartIndustry applications, where TNO develops technology for the Dutch/European manufacturing industry to sustain in the global competition, with projects in the following areas:

  • High tech machine building in multi disciplinary teams;
  • Targetting autonomous robotics and zero programming solutions to increase industrial productivity;
  • Low/medium volume production of high value series at the price of mass manufacturing;
  • Adaptive robotics fusing (CAD)models with sensor data (2D and 3D robotvision).

Your challenge lies in connecting all expertises involved in a project, and in shifting between detailed technical discussions and maintaining a helicopter view to make strategic project decisions. These decisions often have to be made on the basis of incomplete data, and therefore it's important that you are aware of the underlying technical and physical principles.

Your main contributions to the projects are in the conceptual phase for idea generation and design phase for budgeting, technical decisions and team steering, in close cooperation with the customer(s), subcontractor(s) and partner(s). As system engineer you stay involved up to delivery to the customer, which requires the capability to manage the TNO team and their partners towards the desired performance results within time and budget constraints. In this, you work closely with the project manager. In addition, together with your colleagues you write project proposals for new paid assignments; you define topics for the TNO-internal fundamental research and you mentor your younger colleagues.

What we expect from you

To be successful in this role, you have:

  • A Bachelor or Master in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics or another relevant specialisation.
  • Extensive skills and experience in:
    • Sensor systems.
    • 2D and 3D Robotvision.
    • Machinelearning / AI.
  • Affinity with mechatronic design and/or machine building integration.
  • Experience with motivating, inspiring and convincing colleagues, project teams and customers, being able to steer your team members towards the result you have in mind.A critical mindset, eager to get to know what the customer demand is and willing to outdo his expectations together with your team.
  • A pragmatic and creative attitude.
  • Mastery of the English language, both in speech and in writing.
