Description:

Help us to develop innovative and compact detect-and-avoid radar for safe operation of unmanned aircraft in the near future.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?
Future Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) will operate with an increasing degree of autonomy. TNO is developing an innovative all-weather Detect-and-Avoid radar for Short Range Tactical UAVs. While target detection and tracking is a classic and well-established task for radar, the challenge concerning a Detect-and-Avoid radar is to design a radar sensor that is compact enough for a tactical UAV in terms of size, weight, and power, but is still able to detect small aircraft at several nautical miles distance. This is achieved with a dedicated and innovative multi-beam sensor design, that also requires advanced multi-beam processing for target detection. You will be working on validation and development of these multi-beam detection and tracking algorithms. Depending on the type of internship, the focus will be on implementation and validation of known algorithms or on research and development into new or modified algorithms, bearing in mind the potential for real-time implementation as well.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?
You are in the final stages of your degree in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or a similar degree, and have some track record in the field of signal processing: this should be apparent in your application. You have experience in programming in Matlab, Python and/or related language, you are quick in understanding new software, and algorithms, and you are pragmatic, and focused on making things work. Next to technical expertise, we value communication skills and a results-driven attitude.

Because of the COVID pandemic, we currently only accept people living in the Netherlands. Please, also inquire on the COVID regulations of your university with respect to an internship or thesis assignment.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?
TNO is an independent research organisation whose expertise and research make an important contribution to the competitiveness of companies and organisations, to the economy and to the quality of society as a whole. Innovation with purpose is what TNO stands for. With 3000 people we develop knowledge not for its own sake but for practical application. To create new products that make life more pleasant and valuable and help companies innovate. To find creative answers to the questions posed by society. We work for a variety of customers: governments, companies, service providers and non-governmental organisations.

You will perform this assignment in the Department of Radar Technology. We are a creative group of professionals (60 people) dedicated to the specification, development and evaluation of innovative, high-performance MMICs, miniaturised and integrated RF systems and subsystems, antennas and front-ends, and signal processing algorithms. The department is at the heart of novel, game-changing radar systems and signal processing concepts for the military, space and civil domains.

WHAT CAN TNO OFFER YOU?
You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.
