Are you an accuracy freak? Do atomic clocks and their disturbances interest you, then you are very welcome in our lab to design experiments and assess error effects measured on real hardware.
WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?
In the radar technology group and other sensor groups we are interested in multi-static synchronous observation without being dependent on GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) for synchronization of PNT (Position Navigation Timing). Today there are low-cost chip scale atomic clocks available on the market, but according to their datasheets they face some error sources like: influence of magnetic field strength, temperature and relativistic effects when moving them. To evaluate suitability of these chip scale atomic clocks we have designed a test board with integrated sensors for the error parameters like: accurate thermometer, 3-axis magnetometer, 3-axis gyroscope and 3-axis accelerometer.
Your task will be to define, setup and execute experiments to evaluate the influence of the error sources on the deviation of the atomic clocks. The end result will be a report describing the experimental setups and the clock drift due to the error sources observed in the tests.
You will perform this assignment in the Department of Radar Technology. We are a passionate and creative group of professionals (60 people) dedicated to the specification, development and evaluation of innovative, high-performance MMICs, miniaturised and integrated RF subsystems, antennas and front-ends. The department is at the heart of novel, game-changing radar system and signal processing concepts for the military, space and civil domains.
WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?
You are studying applied physics and you have a strong affinity with experiment design. Practical skills like: operating measurement equipment and programming (Python) for measurement automation, data analysis and data visualization are also required. Next to technical expertise we value communication skills and a results-driven attitude.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?
TNO is an independent research organisation whose expertise and research make an important contribution to the competitiveness of companies and organisations, to the economy and to the quality of society as a whole. Innovation with purpose is what TNO stands for. With 3000 people we develop knowledge not for its own sake but for practical application. To create new products that make life more pleasant and valuable and help companies innovate. To find creative answers to the questions posed by society. We work for a variety of customers: governments, companies, service providers and non-governmental organisations. Working together on new knowledge, better products and clear recommendations for policy and processes. In everything we do, impact is the key. Our product and process innovations and recommendations are only worth something if our customers can use them to boost their competitiveness.
WHAT CAN TNO OFFER YOU?
You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.
