The Spatial Information laboratory (SPINlab) and the Department of Computer Science are searching for a junior with a background in Geographic Information Science and/or Computer Science/ AI to participate in a research project focused at innovation in the field of Linked Data, Machine Learning and 3D point clouds. The project is in close collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat. Rijkswaterstaat is responsible for the design, construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in the Netherlands and part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Between 2015 and 2018 the VU has worked on a series of projects in which possibilities for innovation in data management for asset management have been explored. The result of these pilots have been very promising which have led to funding with which we can formulate PhD research.


Your duties

Within these 6 months the junior researcher’s main task will be to conduct a literature review, develop proof of concepts and conduct interviews with stakeholders at Rijkswaterstaat. The main task will be to produce a research article in which the future possibilities for these technologies are explored. Next, the junior researcher will be given the possibility to produce a PhD research proposal which, when approved by a committee of senior researchers from the University and Rijkswaterstaat, can be executed after the period of 6 months. This temporary contract thus prepares for a PhD position. Since the local stakeholders a mostly Dutch and since the database with which we work are in Dutch we have a preference for someone that reads and speaks Dutch. We are searching for a candidate with a strong Computer Science or Geographic Information Science background, excellent writing skills in English and a basic knowledge in Dutch. Furthermore we are searching for a candidate with an interest in innovative data management, 3D point cloud, knowledge representation and machine learning technologies. Requirements - MSc in either Engineering, computer science, geographic information science or geomatics. - Coding Skills (preferably python, javascript, C#) - Excellent command of the English language (reading, writing and speaking) - Basic knowledge of Dutch - Experience with Geographic Information Systems


What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €1,992 (scale 6)and a maximum €2,770 (scale 6), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE. The initial employment contract will affect a period of 6 months, with the possibility of extension. Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as: a maximum of 41 days of annual leave based on full-time employment 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus contribution to commuting expenses
