The Assignment is issued under the Engineering department. This department is responsible for the realization of all systems put under contract as well as product development. This assignment is part of activities in the field of training and simulation from the engineering department.

ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENT

Thales is investigating Virtual Reality technology (VR) for possible use in its products. The type of Virtual Reality technology Thales uses was started by Linden labs in the VS around 2004 and resulted in the well-known application second life. Thales uses an open source version of the same technology called OpenSim. This technology is targeted for virtual training, virtual meetings , remote control and decision support.

The VR system is composed of a Server (OpenSIm) that manages the Objects in the virtual world and a client , the viewer that renders the VR Scene. We use a open source viewer. This viewer however is to complex to use and cant be tailored to the purpose the VR is used for. Work is started with other educational institution to create a more flexible viewer.

This assignment addresses the general design of the framework of the above viewer.  The framework should allow flexible instantiation of the viewers whilst maintaining its performance. The work to be done is to Investigate possible designs for a framework, starting point is the design of a current viewer called alchemy. Implement a prototype of the framework refactoringthe source code of the Alchemy viewer.
