Are you passionate about conducting research in the field of cybercrime & cybersecurity? Are you a eager to learn and do you want to work on a PhD project? Then we are looking for you!

What exactly will you do?
As a junior researcher / PhD candidate within the Centre of Expertise of Cyber Security you will work on one of our research projects that focus on the human factor of cybersecurity and cybercrime. Within an inspiring research environment and with the supervision of the professor (lector) you will work on one of the research lines aimed at understanding cybercrime and cybercriminals. In addition, you will also have room to take the initiative for new ideas for research.
You contribute on the following projects:

  • Project 1: Crime script analysis of cybercrimes

This research will map the crime scripts of cybercriminals in order to gain insight into the steps criminals take to commit their crimes and to identify so-called bottlenecks: those steps that are crucial for criminals to commit their crimes. Based on these crime scripts, various interventions aimed at both the offenders and the victims will be developed and tested.

  • Project 2: Situational crime prevention to deflect cybercriminals

This project will focus on the cybercriminals themselves, especially on youngsters in the early stages of their criminal career. Different experiments aimed at deflecting potential juvenile cybercriminals will be set up to understand what strategies work.
Your responsibilities:

  • Conduct research independently under the supervision of the professor (lector);
  • Support and facilitate collaboration with internal and external partners and student projects. You also ensure that the logistics around the project run smoothly;
  • Publish peer-reviewed articles that result in a dissertation;
  • Present your work at national and international conferences.

Your profile
We are looking for two ambitious junior researchers / PhD candidates with excellent analytical skills, who are motivated to contribute to the impact of our research in higher education and society. Furthermore, we would like to see in your resume that you:

  • have completed a Master’s degree;
  • are interested in the field of cybercrime and/or cyber security;
  • have prior experience with quantitative and qualitative research methods and are able to manage projects;
  • have strong organizational skills, and are able to organize meetings with project partners;
  • have excellent writing and communication skills in English.

What we offer: 

  • An appointment of 0,8 – 1,0 fte for a period of 4 years (D4).
  • A salary between € 2.845,48 and the maximum of € 3.920,50 (scale 9) gross per month for a full-time work week;

The research group and the Centre of Expertise Cyber Security
The focus of Centre of Expertise Cyber Security is the cyber resilience of public and private organizations. The Centre of Expertise conducts applied research in the field of cyber security, taking into account human factors, organizational aspects and technology. Within the Centre, you will work within the research group that focuses on the human factor in cybercrime. This research group ‘Cybersecurity in het mkb’ (Cyber Security in SMEs) is a joint research group from THUAS and the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR).
