About this position

At TNO, we develop software for Automated Driving vehicles. In order to have automated driving accepted by the public, it is extremely important to be able to explain the behavior of the vehicle. Are you interested in improving our AD vehicles? Please read further!

What will be your role?

One of the challenges in Automated Driving is “How the vehicle makes its’ decisions” and whether the chosen behavior of the vehicle is accepted by the other road participants as “Safe”. In order to facilitate this classification, TNO is working on a framework that depicts the direct environment of the vehicle as a ‘risk map’. For that risk map it is important that:

  • Every entity that can be detected has a risk profile (shape) connected;
  • The elevation of the profile can be trained based on real world annotated driving data;
  • After automated elevation detection, the profile could be further finetuned manually.

The philosophy of this work is, that the resulting risk map could be used to classify whether a particular driving behavior is safe, or not. Moreover, the risk profile could be interfaced with a motion planner, which consequently plans a path for the Autonomous Vehicle.

Proposed approach:

  • Investigate the different data sources TNO has available for this task;
  • Desk Research into Clustering Methods that could facilitate the risk profile selection and training of the elevation of those profiles based on the pre-recorded video stream;
  • Implementation (programming) those clustering and classification methods on pre-recorded and annotated data (good/bad driving behavior);
  • Verification whether the proposed clustering methods outperforms the current classification approach e.g. based on prerecorded data, or in a simulation environment.

What we expect from you

We require that you are familiar with statistics for data science and have experience with data progressing as well as clustering and classification methods. You are knowledgeable in programming (please indicate your programming language strengths in your application) and you are willing to learn. Experience with Linux and ROS is beneficial. We like you to start as soon as possible. The thesis fits to a 9 month project (based on full time availability). Familiarity with risk assessment and/or vehicle automation would be considered a plus. The project is perfect for someone with a hands-on, lets-try-this attitude. Finally, successful candidates should be able to spend at least 2 days a week in our TNO Helmond premises to enable you to work with our tools and to have short communication lines.

What can you expect of your work situation?
