Contribute to optimising the safety of military operations. Envision it. Become a researcher of electromagnetic signatures at TNO in The Hague.
The signatures of a (military) platform comprise all the platform’s physical properties that can be detected by a sensor (e.g. its radar and infrared signature). Naval vessels can also have underwater electrical and magnetic signatures. Signatures significantly increase the chance of detection, classification, and identification by enemy sensor systems, thus making the platform vulnerable. Reducing and controlling these signatures is crucial to optimise the safety of military operations. In this position, you’ll be able to contribute to this.
What will be your role?
You’ll work in a team to develop knowledge in the field of electromagnetic signatures for a really special client, i.e. the Dutch Ministry of Defence. You’ll lay the foundation for various technological innovations through the algorithms and models you’ll develop. On the one hand, they’ll give Defence insight into its own signatures, thereby improving operational decision-making. On the other hand, these innovations will generate insight into the vulnerabilities of hostile platforms, potentially resulting in tactical advantages.
You’ll work closely with fellow researchers, Defence, and industrial partners while working on various research projects. Your broad technical interest will come in handy here. Physical modelling, machine learning, data assimilation, system development, analysis, experimentation, and testing – it's all here; in other words, a unique position at the innovative frontline of the defence domain. In this position, you’ll be part of the Electronic Defence expert group.
What we expect from you
You’re a researcher who enjoys getting to the bottom of one or more subjects without losing sight of the world around you; on the contrary, you enjoy working with colleagues and/or presenting your work to clients. Because regardless how far removed your research may at times seem from daily life, you’re driven to develop knowledge that will contribute to long-term peace and security.
Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:
- A university master’s degree in physics, mathematics, geophysics, electrical engineering, or similar.
- Some scientific work experience is preferred, preferably gained during your PhD.
- Interest in one or more of the following areas: optimisation, inverse problems, numerical methods, signal processing, or electromagnetism, as well as the drive to specialise further.
What you'll get in return
Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3,000,- and € 3,600,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.
Perhaps you would like to grow your career in the direction of commerce or consultancy? Or would you like to become a project manager? Immerse yourself in sustainable innovations? Or carve out a career as a technical expert?
TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:
- An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
- The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.

- Access to our Talent Development Programme.
- Networking opportunities and great activities organized by Jong TNO.
- A good pension scheme.
