Contributing to boosting systems engineering capabilities and innovation in the Netherlands’ high-tech industry. Envision it. Become a senior research fellow at TNO in Eindhoven.

About this position

When it comes to developing and manufacturing high-tech solutions, such as medical systems, nanoscale microscopy and chip manufacturing machines, the Dutch high-tech industry is second to none. To future-proof its leading position in the world and its contribution to society, innovation is crucial. At TNO Embedded Systems Innovation (ESI) we tackle the complexity of increasingly advanced innovations in digital ecosystems. As senior research fellow, you will take the lead in model-based research geared to pragmatic solutions. Envision working with leading brands like ASML, Canon, ITEC, Philips, Thales, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Vanderlande, and accelerating innovations.

What will be your role?

You will play a key role in our research projects, in which you will be modelling very complex high-tech systems. In the project definition phase, you will support the business developer and project manager with your technical expertise and participate in meetings with our industrial partners. Identifying their needs, you will gain insight in the underlying problem. You will largely be working on the partner’s premises, taking the lead in and coaching fluid teams of our partner’s staff and expert colleagues. Your deliverables are viable proofs of concept, embracing the full scope of systems engineering. Because your work is not just about the performance and evolution of highly complex, often AI-enabled systems, but also about model lifecycle management, usability to secure adoption by the designated users, and their economic viability.

Your home base will be TNO ESI. Some 60 researchers, specialised in a host of disciplines, make up our internationally diverse team. You will be joining relevant expertise teams in which we share knowledge and ideas. Together, we drive open innovation, helping the Dutch high-tech industry embed cutting edge methodologies and accelerate innovation as well as lead times. What we deliver will be used in real life. We foster a collaborative and welcoming environment in an informal atmosphere, and will help you get your bearings. You will also get all the coaching and support you need to develop and grow your career, while you yourself will be coaching others.

What we expect from you

You participated or collaborated in researchprojects geared to developing solutions from a systems engineering perspective, and help future-proof the Dutch high-tech industry. Being able to identify underlying problems, you know how to develop models and methodologies that will help our industrial partners accelerate innovation. Harnessing your communication and stakeholder management skills, you build trust and inspire colleagues and our partners’ staff to develop pragmatic solutions that will be put in practice. Combined with your resilience, these skills will also help you navigate organisational and operational challenges that are part and parcel of high-tech manufacturing. This means, e.g., convincing people to free up time or dealing with resistance to change. You also know how to coach diverse groups of people, working towards common and meaningful results.

Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A master’s degree or PhD in computer science, electrical engineering or another relevant subject.
  • Experience and knowledge of systems architecture and systems engineering methods and processes applied in the high-tech industry, or similar complex environments.
  • Familiarity with modelling languages for complex high-tech systems, such as SysML, UML, state machines, knowledge graphs, etc.
  • A track record of participation or collaboration in researchprojects conducted in the past few years, in which you have taken the lead.
  • An excellent command of written and spoken English, as you’ll be working with international colleagues and partners.
