What will you be doing?
Problem:
The world is becoming more and more complicated, with many more stakeholders that collaborate in fluid ecosystems. Individual enterprises are confronted with more data, from more partners and more heterogenous sources in business networks, which are more dynamic than ever before. To gear their internal information systems to these growing and varying data channels, current strategies fail to keep up with the vast changes that are required, not so much in regards to getting access to the data as in actually get the internal data systems using it correctly. Understanding precedes use, and since computers are fundamentally incapable of understanding, humans are required to provide that last connection.

Solution:
The objective is to provide software with an access-and-play capability: Open Interoperability based upon ontologies, alignments, mediators and semantic protocols.

Method:
We have developed an approach based on formal semantics towards semantic interoperability that extends the communication protocols into the semantic level. This semantic protocol resolves the variations and inconsistencies between the formal semantics of both peers.

What do we require of you?
We seek software engineers who are interested in AI and ontology engineering, or AI specialists who are experienced in software engineering. Your level of expertise is at least Bachelor grade. Your collaboration and social skills are beyond doubt, as is your capability to judge for yourself and work independently. Either master end project candidates, or students interested in doing a work placement or apprenticeship, or similar, are invited to apply. Work experience is not required, but can come in handy.

What can you expect of your work situation?
TNO is an independent research organisation whose expertise and research make an important contribution to the competitiveness of companies and organisations, to the economy and to the quality of society as a whole. Innovation with purpose is what TNO stands for. With 3000 people we develop knowledge not for its own sake but for practical application. To create new products that make life more pleasant and valuable and help companies innovate. To find creative answers to the questions posed by society. We work for a variety of customers: governments, the SME sector, large companies, service providers and non-governmental organisations. Working together on new knowledge, better products and clear recommendations for policy and processes. In everything we do, impact is the key. Our product and process innovations and recommendations are only worth something if our customers can use them to boost their competitiveness.

What can TNO offer you?
You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.
